PCM television - The Problem of Unfair Damnation

Many people find it impossible to believe that a loving God would send good people to Hell. They argue that a good, loving God, would not send good people to hell simply because they dont know about Jesus or haven't accepted Him as their Savior. What does the Bible teach about this and is there something about the nature of God's knowledge, his grace toward children and his justice and mercy toward his creation that might help us to understand the truth?

Pro-Choice Censorship

CBS has approved a 30-second ad that will be shown during this year's Superbowl that has a national coalition of women's groups furious and demanding it's removal. The ad was created by Focus on the Family (and paid for by donations outside of the group's general fund) and stars Tim Tebow and his mother Pam Tebow. The ad tells the story of Pam Tebow's 1987 pregnancy where she ignored recommendations by doctors to abort her fifth child due to an illness she contracted during a mission trip to the Philippines. Pam gave birth to Tim Tebow, who went on to win the 2007 Heisman Trophy and two BCS championships for the Florida Gators.

In a letter from the Women's Media Center, they ask that CBS refuse the ad in part because it was conceived by Focus on the Family.
By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will damage its reputation, alienate viewers, and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers.
Terry O'Neill, the president of the National Organization for Women, said that she respected women such as Pam Tebow for the private choices they made but condemned the ad as "extraordinarily offensive and demeaning."

Both groups beg the question and assume that abortion is not wrong and therefore just as viable an option as not killing your unborn child. We need to remember that we have common ground with the pro-choice movement in all areas of a woman's life to choose, be it her education, her vocation, her right to vote and her free choice to marry and to whom. We would even agree that women should not have the right to murder. The choice argument is simply a distraction from the fact that the embryo is a living human being that is murdered without penalty through the legal loophole that is Roe vs. Wade.

O'Neill continued,
That's not being respectful of other people's lives. It is offensive to hold one way out as being a superior way over everybody else's.
The irony is lost on these groups that believe that their way, so called "pro-choice", is a superior way over everybody else's, so much so in fact that the CHOICE to keep your baby, even a baby that might not survive (see Friday's post), needs to be censored.

Check It Out

Check out these links.

To Save A Life opens today. It looks promising. Although I enjoyed Facing the Giants and Fireproof, they are definitely "Christian" movies that while selling well to Christians, don't seem to have much impact on the culture at large. While not a huge budget film, To Save A Life is a mainstream film (Samuel L. Goldwyn Pictures) that seems to avoid portraying Christians in the typical Hollywood stereotypical light as judgmental nay-sayers.

Jeremy D. Boreing says in his review of the film,
In fact, I believe it is fair to say that To Save a Life gives the most accurate portrayal of the youth-Christian experience in this country that I have ever seen in film.
We'll see... If you see the film, let me know what you think.

"Social Justice" Kevin DeYoung asks Christians to be careful when using the term social justice.
The term is unassailable to some and arouses suspicion in others. For many Christians, social justice encompasses everything good we should be doing in the world, from hunger relief to serving the poor to combating sex trafficking. But the phrase is also used to support more debatable matters like specific health care legislation, minimum wage increases, or reducing carbon emissions. If something can be included as a “social justice” issue then no one can oppose said issue, because who in their right mind favors social injustice?
Is Proselytizing Intolerant? In response to the criticism Brit Hume has received over his recent comments regarding Tiger Woods, Micheal Gerson argues that
the American idea of religious liberty does not forbid proselytization; it presupposes it. Free, autonomous individuals not only have the right to hold whatever beliefs they wish, they have a right to change those beliefs -- and to persuade others to change as well. Just as there is no political liberty without the right to change one's convictions and publicly argue for them, there is no religious liberty without the possibility of conversion and persuasion.
11 minutes? The Wall Street Journal reports that only 11 minutes of actual play occur during an average NFL game. I'm not a football watcher, but apparantly, I'm not missing much.

The Gospel Fulness Was Restored

The Mormon religion proudly teaches that God the Father and Jesus the Son (two separate beings) came to Joseph Smith to assure him that all the Christian religions were corrupt, and to have him restore the "plain and precious truths" that had been lost from the Bible due to a Great Apostasy.

The religion also teaches that the current LDS prophet (and a few other top church leaders) are god's mouthpieces -- that he gives them new advice, instruction, and revelation for the church body as necessary. In fact, this is something the church believes sets them apart from Christianity (because Christianity has a closed canon of scripture).

The above two teachings are fundamental to the belief that the LDS church is the "one true church" on earth. God's true GOSPEL was restored through Joseph Smith, and after that time, any additional truth that god wants to share comes down through LDS prophets. Everything outside of the LDS church, while perhaps containing some truth, does not have all truth people need to know.

It's not always easy, however, to figure out what current Mormon truth is. It is not necessarily found in LDS scripture because the modern-day prophets may have revealed something newer. It is also not necessarily found in the sermons/writings of past prophets, because there may have been more pertinent, information given since their revelations, as well.

So how do you know for sure what the current doctrine of the LDS church is?

Luckily, the church has an official website. If there is anywhere a person can find consolidated, accurate, up-to-date, Mormon truth, it ought to be there, right? At least, as much of it as can be publicly displayed!

I went to the website to find out what the Mormon "GOSPEL" is, effective right now, officially. What I found, I'm going to share here, because anyone who is, or wants to be, or knows a Mormon, should know. (Any emphasis added below is mine).

According to www. mormon.org, "The Official Web site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", the gospel is:

“The ‘good news’ of God’s plan for the salvation of mankind. At the center of His plan is the Atoning sacrifice of His son Jesus Christ, in whom alone salvation is possible. In its fulness, the gospel includes all of the commandments, principles, ordinances, and covenants whereby human beings can be forgiven of sin, overcome the world, and attain immortality and eternal life in the kingdom of God.”

In Mormonism, salvation is the ability to be resurrected (which will happen to everyone), and the ability to overcome sin in this life. "Eternal life in the kingdom of God" is the same as eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom, and is the aim of all faithful LDS. This highest degree of heaven can only be achieved through the "gospel fulness" that Joseph Smith restored.

It must, therefore, be of utmost importance to know what is CURRENTLY included in "all the commandments, principles, ordinances, and covenants", of the "fulness of the gospel".

It took a little bit of digging around, but I found the following on the website. I've paraphrased much of it, but included some direct quotes which I thought were interesting.

Ready? Here we go:

The Commandments:

1- “Obedience to God’s Commandments” -- (you must obey the Ten Commandments)

2- “Pray Often” -- (I believe there is a number/time requirement on this, but I could not find it on the website)

3- “Study the Scriptures” -- (you must study the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price).

4- “Keep the Sabbath Day Holy”-- (you must attend church and take the sacrament to renew your covenants and show “that you are willing to repent of your sins and mistakes”).

5- “Baptism and Confirmation” -- (you must repent of your sins, be baptized into and confirmed a member of the LDS church by someone with the proper 'priesthood authority').

6- “Follow the Prophet” -- (you must “…have faith in God’s chosen prophet, gain conviction of his divine calling, and follow his teachings. You must prepare yourself so that when the prophets and apostles speak, the Holy Ghost can confirm the truths they teach and you can then determine to follow the counsel they give you.” Sustaining new church leaders is also a part of this commandment).

7- “Live the Law of Chastity” -- (“You are to keep your thoughts clean and be modest in your dress, speech, and actions. You must avoid pornography… and treat the God-given procreative power and your body as sacred gifts. You are not to participate in abortions or homosexual or lesbian relations… those who are married to more than one person at a time may not be baptized.”)

8- “Obey the Word of Wisdom” -- (“In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper eating and physical and spiritual health, God has spoken against the use of tobacco, alcohol, coffee and tea, harmful, habit-forming drugs.”)

9- “Live the Law of Tithing” -- (“A commandment from the Lord to pay one tenth of one’s annual increase or income for the building of His Church on the earth.” “Tithes and offerings are paid *voluntarily and privately”).
>*(However, you must be a full tithe-payer to receive a "temple recommend", which is needed before you can go through the temple to do some of the ordinances and make some of the covenants required for the Celestial Kingdom).

10- “Observe the Law of the Fast” -- (you must skip two meals once per month and make a “fast offering”).

11- “Obey and Honor the Law” -- (you must obey “the laws of the country… to be good citizens, to participate in civil government and the political process, and to render community service as concerned citizens.”)

12- “Endure to the End” -- (“If you endure to the end of your life and stay true to your covenants, you will receive eternal life.”)

The Principles:

“… include faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, *repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities”, Word of Wisdom, tithing...

*(Repentance is “the process of experiencing sincere regret or sorrow for wrongdoing, confessing one’s sin and asking for forgiveness, making restitution for any damage done, and committing not to repeat the sin).

The Ordinances:

An ordinance is “a sacred rite or ceremony” such as baptism, confirmation, administering to the sick, baptism for the dead, marriage in the temple, endowments, and sealings. “Some ordinances, such as baptism, are essential for salvation”.

The Covenants:

A covenant is “a binding and solemn agreement, contract, or promise between God and a person or group of persons upon which eternal blessings are based.”

In Baptism and Confirmation, you “covenant with God to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, to follow Him, and to keep His commandments. In return, He promises to forgive your sins and let you return to live with Him, provided you keep your covenants”.

Mormon.org did not give a full list of covenants. Some that were not included are listed below.

In the LDS temple endowment ceremony, you “solemnly covenant and promise before God, angels, and [the] witnesses at the altar that you will…”
1 - “…observe and keep the Law of the Lord and to hearken to the counsel of your husband as he hearkens unto the counsel of the Father”, if female, or “…obey the Law of God and keep his commandments”, if male. (This is "The Law of Obedience”).
2 - “…sacrifice all that you possess, even your own life if necessary, in sustaining and defending the Kingdom of God.” ( This is “The Law of Sacrifice”).
3 - “…avoid all lightmindedness, loud laughter, evil speaking of the Lord’s anointed, the taking of the name of God in vain, and every other unholy and impure practice.” (This is “The Law of the Gospel”).
4 - “…have no sexual relations except with your husband to whom you are legally and lawfully wedded.” (This is “The Law of Chastity”).
5 - “…consecrate yourselves, your time, talents and everything which the Lord has blessed you, or with which he may bless you, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for the building up of the Kingdom of God on the earth and for the establishment of Zion.” (This is “The Law of Consecration”).

IN SUMMARY: The LDS restored gospel is all of the commandments, ordinances, principles, and covenants of Mormonism, that, unless you do/keep, you have no promise of eternal life with god. Can you imagine what a faithful Mormon must feel like at this time of year, making up their New Year's Resolutions list?

If you made it through this article, I trust you have seen that the Mormon gospel bears resemblance to the 'heavy load' Jesus spoke of in Matthew 11:28-30.

The Biblical (un-restored, if you will) gospel in it's simplest form is found in 1 Cor. 15:1-4 which says that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again. It would seem that the gospel is all about what Jesus did. That is good news because none of us can be perfect enough (Romans 3:23) to earn our salvation through our righteousness and that Jesus came to give us His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 3:26). We don't work to be better (Romans 4:5, Titus 3:5); we trade in the mess we've made of our lives, and He gives us a new life in Him (2 Cor. 5:17). And we DO have a guarantee, right now (Romans 10:9).

The word "Gospel" means "good news". Which one of the above is good news? I think so too.

More Support for the Reliability of the Bible

Many skeptics and critics of the Bible (both outside and inside the faith), have argued that the Old Testament is simply not as "Old" as it says it is! These critics argue that the text was actually written much later than the supposed authorship maintains; they deny that Moses could have contributed to the scriptures and would like us to believe that the majority of the text was written in the days of Ezra / Nehemiah or later. Well, a recent discovery now supports the very early authorship of the Old Testament and fits in well with our current podcast series on the reliability of the Bible.

ScienceDaily posted an article that describes the discovery of an ancient shard of pottery discovered at Khirbet Qeiyafa near the Elah valley. the pottery contains Hebrew writing that dates to the 10th century BC, which was the period of King David's reign:

"A breakthrough in the research of the Hebrew scriptures has shed new light on the period in which the Bible was written. Prof. Gershon Galil of the Department of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa has deciphered an inscription dating from the 10th century BCE (the period of King David's reign), and has shown that this is a Hebrew inscription. The discovery makes this the earliest known Hebrew writing. The significance of this breakthrough relates to the fact that at least some of the biblical scriptures were composed hundreds of years before the dates presented today in research and that the Kingdom of Israel already existed at that time."

If nothing else, this Hebrew writing demonstrates the very early existence of the Kingdom of Israel, and forms the reasonable foundation for language that was also used to pen the Bible. Remember that when we examine ancient history (similar to the examination of a Cold Case Homicide) we assemble a cumulative circumstantial case that then serves as the most reasonable explanation of the evidence. The case for the reliability of the Bible is getting stronger every day.

The Activity of Rest

Sitting on the doctor’s cold ex-amination table, I nervously watched him scratch out some notes on his chart. He then looked over at me and pronounced his conclusion that I had little more than the common flu. He told me that I simply needed to rest, and he sent me on my way. I can tell you that I was angry! I went to the doctor because I was tired of being sick and I was ready to ACT in order to get better! I wanted to take action against the flu I had, yet this doctor simply told me to do nothing.

Well, by commanding me to “rest” the doctor was, in fact, doing just what I wanted. I just didn’t realize that “rest” was a form of action! We presently are living at rest with God. He has saved us through the blood of His Son, and we don’t need to do a thing in order to benefit from this salvation. It is a free gift. Yet in our rest, God has given us the opportunity to respond to his gift. In fact, this rest is in itself a form of activity that God expects us to enjoy.

God has given us examples of this in His Word. In the Book of Joshua, God brings his people to the promised land and delivers up their enemies until Isreal is occupying the very land God promised them many generations before. As the work of fighting concluded and the land was divided, Joshua addressed the chosen, saying, “Now that the Lord your God has given your brothers rest as He promised, return to your homes...” (Joshua 22:4, NIV)

But Joshua was clear that this rest was not without the opportunity for response. He told the people that in this rest they were “to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to obey his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul” (Joshua 22:5, NIV).

Similarly, even after the work of salvation has been done for us by Christ on the cross, there is still an opportunity for us to respond joyously in the midst of the 'rest'.

Love God
Its easy for us to say that we love God, and it may not seem like it should take any effort on our part to do this, but clearly God has loved us first so that we can then learn to love others. God doesn’t want lip service on this issue, and He knows that there is a directly proportional relationship between the degree to which we love God and the degree to which we are capable of loving others.

Follow God
We are to see Jesus as a model for our lives and to “walk in all His ways”. How are we to do this unless we are familiar with the life and words of Christ? I want to know Jesus intimately enough to act as He would act, or at least make the effort, with my human linitations. I don't see this behavior as a "good work" that earns my salvation. Instead, I see it for what it is: the joyous and spontaneous response of a grateful heart.

Rely on God
This is a tough one. I have a tendency to want to control my own environment and take action, as if I was the person who determines my fate in the first place. But if we are to “hold fast to Him” we must first realize our inability to sustain the universe, even the immediate universe of our familys, our jobs, and our personal lives. Only God does that. I must realize that my health, my family, my career, everything in my life is in His hands, not mine. As John the Baptist would say, I must decrease, and God must increase.

Serve God
James made it clear that faith results in a transformed life. My spiritual growth is constructed as much on my service as it is on my intellectual belief. In fact, service is the mechanism that God has provided to us as a method for change, growth and learning. If I am not serving God, I am serving myself. If I want to grow and learn about God, I must serve Him, not me.

As I left the doctor’s office, I had to realize that “resting” was actually an activity that I could DO. By resting actively I am restored to physical health. Similarly, as a saved Christian, the rest given me by God results in activity and joyous response. If I rest as Joshua instructed us, I am restored spiritually. In essence, my spiritual condition grows and strengthens, becoming better able to resist the illnesses and influences of the world around me.

We sometimes think that in a perfect environment (like Heaven) we will have no work or responsibilty at all. Kind of like an island vacation. But God never intended us to be idle. In the first perfect world, God put Adam “in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (Gen 2:15 NIV). God designed work and responsibility as a source of joy and growth. A perfect environment has labor as an essential ingredient.

Britt Hume is a Stud

On last week's "Fox News Sunday" the topic of Tiger Woods came up and Britt Hume (as a member of the round table panel) made the following statement:

"He's said to be a Buddhist, I don't think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith, so my message to Tiger would be, "Tiger, turn your faith, turn to the Christian faith, and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world."
Britt said this in a completely sincere fashion and, in doing so, made a stand for the exclusivity of Christianity. As you might expect, his comments made headlines as journalists responded to his bold assertion (USA Today, Politics Daily and Huffington Post were among the first to post stories). John Stewart slammed Britt on The Daily Show and Britt eventually found himself on the O'Reilly Factor.

In his first appearance since making the comments, Britt had a choice to make. He's clearly not a back down kind of guy:

The Problem of Christian Evil

I'm sure you've heard the objection that Christianity is the source of so much historic evil (like the Crusades and the Inquisition), that it simply cannot reflect the existence of a true loving God (even if there was one). I get this objection all the time from atheists who write to me in response to our website. I think the answer to this objection lies in a proper understanding of our human nature.

There can be no doubt that history is replete with examples of Christian groups that have committed horrific evil upon those with whom they disagreed. This evil cannot be minimized nor should it be ignored. In fact, over the course of history, many have committed great violence in the name of Christianity, claiming that their Christian worldview authorized or justified their actions! But a fair examination of history will also reveal that Christians were not alone in this approach toward those who disagreed with them. Groups holding virtually every worldview, from theists to atheists, have been mutually guilty of murderous behavior. Atheists point to the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition when making a case against Christians, theists point to the atheistic regimes of Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse Tung when making a case against atheists. Death statistics are debated in an effort to argue which groups were more violent, but all this seems to miss the point. The common denominator in all these violent human groups was not worldview; it was the presence of humans!

History has demonstrated that humans are predisposed toward violence. Regardless of their worldview, humans will try to find a way to justify their actions toward evil. The question is not really which group is more violent but which worldview best authorizes and accepts this violence. Christians who commit horrific evil toward other humans actually have to act in opposition to the teaching of their Master, Jesus Christ. The Gospels repeatedly demonstrate that Jesus came to "guide our feet into the way of peace" (Luke 1:79), and Jesus taught his followers to love their enemies (Matthew 5:44). Christians who have committed atrocities over the ages have had to do so in rebellion; they ignored or were ignorant of the teachings of Jesus. But if atheism is true, and humans are not specially designed in the image of God, why should any of us feel compelled to treat other people groups with the respect that Jesus taught his followers to have for their enemies? If the world is simply filled with species that are competing for the same resources, and if history belongs to those species and groups who are best suited for survival and reproduction, why should we be concerned with those groups who are not "fit" enough to survive? History is filled with examples of one population group replacing another in the natural struggle for resources. If atheism is true, and survival and reproduction are the only concerns, then the struggle for resources authorizes and justifies human violence. Unlike Christians, atheists can commit genocide without ignoring their worldview; atheists have the freedom to eliminate competing groups as a faithful expression of their worldview.

God has given us the freedom to follow our own nature or to follow the teaching of Jesus. Christians who have committed atrocities over the ages have simply submitted to their natural inclination rather than to the foundational teaching of the Christian Worldview:

Matthew 7:24-26
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand."
