Top Posts of 2011

Happy New Year! Thanks to all our readers and commenters for making 2011 such a great year at the PleaseConvinceMe Blog. Looking back on the year, here are the top posts of 2011 based on pageviews and comments.

5. Sharing the number 5 spot are two great posts by Al. Al has done such a great job looking at the nature of God and debunking the misconceptions often claimed by skeptics regarding Christianity. As J. Warner often mentions, it is these foundational premises that are used to make the case against Christianity or Theism. Al has been systematically "setting the record straight" on many of these false premises this year including the posts Demanding Worship and God Does Not Torture Souls in Hell.

4. As with many of Al's posts this year, the number 4 post Is Christianity Unduly Harsh? is a response to the skeptics who often respond here. We value all comments, especially those who would engage in the pursuit of truth with respect for the other commenters despite disagreeing with them. Thanks to all the $1 Apologists out there that comment here and on our Facebook Fans of PleaseConvinceMe.com page.

3. The number 3 post of 2011, Galatians 5:22 - Joy, was written by Staci. This post was the second in a series of posts on the true meaning of the spiritual fruits of Galatians 5. Speaking from experience as a former Mormon and now devoted follower of Christ, she contrasts the biblical use of joy for the often referred to “feeling” of joy claimed by LDS when praying about the truthfulness of Mormonism.

2. Referring to the exchange between Bill O’Reilly and Dave Silverman, Al writes,
" The problem with O'Reilly's comment is that he did not take the time to explain it in more detail. He was actually using the argument (for the existence of God) from causation. That argument begins with the universal recognition that for every event, there must be a preceding cause. The tides are caused by the moon, true, but this is still the beginning of the analysis. Moving backward in time, there must be a preceding cause for all things, including the water that is being pulled, the moon that is exerting the force, and everything else in the solar system that is functioning in unison for this purpose. Moving backward along the timeline, there must exist a first event - a First Cause - before which there was nothing. What caused this first event must itself be uncaused; it must be infinite and eternal. Otherwise, it too would require an earlier cause. "

And, drum roll please…

1. The number 1 blog post of 2011 was Why Demanding Extraordinary Evidence Makes Little Sense. Here again, Al tackles the often spouted but seldom thought through premise "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence,” usually regarding the miraculous. Al proposes the idea that this is a rather self-defeating way to go about the task of acquiring knowledge. He also lists some of the truly "extraordinary" evidence Christianity is in fact based on.
